One of the most common questions I hear from Tampa families is: when should we schedule our session? Florida's seasons are different from most of the country, and the timing really does matter when it comes to comfort, light, and the overall feel of your images. Here is a breakdown of what to expect throughout the year.
Fall (October through November): The Sweet Spot
This is hands down the most popular time for outdoor family sessions in Tampa. Temperatures drop into the 70s, humidity eases up, and the light in late afternoon takes on a warm golden quality that photographs beautifully. If you are hoping for outdoor portraits on the beach or in a park, October and November are the months to aim for. These dates book fast, so I recommend reserving your spot as early as August.
Winter (December through February): Quiet and Beautiful
Tampa's mild winters make December through February a genuinely lovely time to shoot. Temperatures sit comfortably in the 60s and low 70s, which means everyone stays comfortable and relaxed. Holiday sessions in December are always popular for families wanting portraits for cards or gifts. January and February are a hidden gem. The light is soft and warm and sessions are a little easier to book.
Spring (March through May): Lush and Bright
Spring in Tampa brings lush greenery, blooming wildflowers, and long evenings that give us plenty of golden hour time. March and April are wonderful months for outdoor sessions before the heat and humidity of summer arrive. By May the temperatures are climbing, so earlier session times work best.
Summer (June through September): Studio or Sunset Only
Tampa summers are hot, humid, and prone to afternoon thunderstorms. I still do outdoor sessions in summer but schedule them strictly at golden hour, around 7pm, when temperatures have eased and the storm risk has usually passed. Summer is also a great time to book a studio session if outdoor heat is a concern, especially with young children or newborns.
The One Thing That Never Changes
Regardless of the season, golden hour is always the goal for outdoor sessions. That last hour of daylight transforms any location, whether a beach, a park, or a backyard, into something warm and cinematic. Plan to arrive refreshed and ready about 10 minutes before sunset for the best results.
