Fall is the only season where the background has a strong opinion about your outfit. Wisconsin foliage brings a lot of orange, gold and rust into the frame on its own, and the families who look best in fall photos are the ones who let the trees do that work.
Do Not Compete With the Leaves
The most common mistake is dressing everyone in fall colors to match a fall setting. Orange sweaters against orange maples turn the whole picture into one warm blur and nobody stands out. Wear colors that sit calmly against autumn instead: cream, oatmeal, soft white, sage, olive, dusty blue, charcoal, deep plum.
Pick a Palette, Not a Uniform
Choose two or three colors for the family and let everyone wear a different piece within them. Identical outfits read as dated almost immediately, while a shared palette looks intentional for years. A good test: lay everything out on a bed together. If one item jumps out at you, it will jump out in the photo too.
Texture Carries Fall
This is the season where texture does more than color. Chunky knits, corduroy, suede, wool, flannel and denim all photograph beautifully in low autumn light and add depth that a flat cotton tee never will. If you own one piece with real texture, fall is when to wear it.
Dress for the Actual Temperature
An October evening at High Cliff can drop quickly once the sun is behind the trees. Layers let us shoot longer and keep everyone comfortable, and a coat that comes off for the last ten minutes is far better than a shivering four year old in a thin dress. Bring blankets. They are useful for warmth and they photograph well.
What to Avoid
Large logos and character prints date a photo instantly. Neon pulls color onto skin. Tight stripes and small busy patterns can shimmer oddly in camera. And white sneakers, which nobody ever plans for, tend to be the brightest thing in an otherwise soft frame, so consider boots or something in a muted tone.
One Last Thing About Shoes
We are usually walking on grass, dirt or fallen leaves. Heels sink, and the whole family ends up standing still because one person cannot move. Flat and comfortable keeps the session relaxed, and relaxed is what makes the photos look like you.
Let the trees be the color. You just have to be warm and comfortable.
