There is a very short and very magical window in Wisconsin each spring when the apple orchards bloom and the countryside turns soft and white and pink. If you are expecting and your due date falls in late spring or early summer, you have the opportunity for some of the most breathtaking maternity portraits that Appleton has to offer. Here is why spring is one of my favorite seasons to photograph expecting families here in the Fox Valley.
The Orchard Backdrop
The blooming orchards around the Appleton area create a naturally stunning backdrop that requires very little else. The soft white and blush blossoms, the dappled light filtering through the branches, and the peaceful quiet of the countryside all come together in a way that feels timeless. These are the kinds of images you frame and pass down.
Bloom season in Wisconsin typically falls between late April and mid May depending on the year and the weather. I watch the orchards closely each spring and communicate timing updates to clients who have spring sessions booked so we can catch peak bloom.
What to Wear for a Spring Outdoor Session
For orchard or outdoor spring sessions I love soft, romantic looks. Flowing maxi gowns in cream, blush, sage, or dusty blue all photograph beautifully against the spring greenery. Layers are smart in early Wisconsin spring. Mornings can still be chilly so I recommend having a cozy wrap or cardigan for warmth between setups. We will time the session to the warmest and most beautiful part of the afternoon.
Timing Your Spring Maternity Session
Most expecting mothers schedule their maternity session between 28 and 34 weeks. If you are hoping for a spring session in the orchards, I recommend booking early in your second trimester to make sure we secure the right week within bloom season. Dates fill quickly in April and May and cannot always be moved to accommodate last-minute requests.
