Some of the most treasured images from any newborn session are the sibling ones. The way a big brother leans in to get a closer look. The way sisters wrap their arms around a tiny baby. These moments are fleeting and real and they make for images that families hang on their walls for years. If you have older children joining your Appleton newborn session, here is everything you need to know.
When to Do Sibling Photos
I always suggest doing sibling images early in the session while the older child is fresh and cooperative. We get those special together moments first, then the helper adult takes the sibling out for a snack or a short walk while we continue with baby-only poses. This approach keeps everyone happy and the sibling images feel relaxed rather than forced.
Preparing Your Older Child
Talk to your child before the session so they know what to expect. Let them know they will get to meet the baby and have their picture taken, but that the session will mostly focus on the new baby. For toddlers especially, keeping expectations simple and positive helps. A small treat or promise for after the session is always a good motivator.
What to Dress Siblings In
I recommend soft neutrals and simple outfits that coordinate with but do not exactly match what you are wearing. Cream, white, blush, sage, and light blue all work beautifully. Avoid busy patterns or anything with large logos. The goal is for the sibling's outfit to feel cohesive with the rest of the session without pulling attention away from the connection between the children.
Poses That Work Beautifully
Some of my favorite sibling poses include the big sibling lying on a blanket next to baby, a couch or bed pose where older children sit close and look down at the newborn, and gentle cuddle poses where the sibling holds baby with parent support nearby. I guide everything safely and never rush these moments. The best images happen when everyone is comfortable and relaxed.
What If My Child Is Nervous
Not every child warms up immediately and that is completely normal. I work slowly and at the child's pace. Sometimes the best sibling images happen near the end of the session once the child has settled in and stopped thinking about the camera. Patience always pays off.
